Dr. Terry Goforth

Dr. Terry Goforth is a Full Professor of Chemistry and Physics at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). She specializes in Cosmology and Atomic Physics.

EDUCATION

1981 – B.S. Physics and Chemistry, Southwestern Oklahoma State University

1987 – M.S. Physics, University of Oklahoma

1990 – Ph.D. Theoretical Atomic Physics, University of Oklahoma

1989 – Began teaching at SWOSU

SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY

  • Solar Eclipse Research:
    • Safe viewing practices, activities for school children, and advice for teachers.
      Details for expert observation using telescopes and sensors.
    • Reading on skeptical inquiry of pseudo-scientific claims, educational approaches to enhance critical and scientific thinking and scientific literacy.
    • Reading on natural causes for climate change and the possible impact of human activity.
    • Reading on and evaluation of alternative fuel sources.
    • Full multichannel investigation of small atoms using Schwinger Variational Principle and Quantum Defect Theory to calculate quantum defects and related properties.
  • Solar Eclipse Research Activity:
    • Assisted Dr. Trail and students to prepare observational experiments for the 2017 total solar eclipse.
    • Traveled with Dr. Trail and six physics students to Glendo, WY, to observe totality on August 21, 2017. (Trip dates August 19-22, 2017)
    • Assisted in the review of the data (from sensors and photographs) and preparation for presentation
